This week I have spent some time looking at my 4th Great-Grandmother; Mary Polly Barrett-Eades. Her Find a Grave memorial is incorrect with regards to the year of her Death. Polly appeared on the 1840 Census within the household of her husband; Ezekiel Eades in Gilreaths District, Wilkes, North Carolina. She is likely the female age 40-49 in the household. Said census was enumerated on 1 June, 1840. Polly's father; Jonathan Barrett died on 21 August, 1840. Jonathans will refers to the " Polly Edis, a deceased daughter of the Said Barrett"(see image below) Given that information one can ascertain that Polly likely died between the 1840 Census in June and her fathers death in August of that same year. Her Find a Grave memorial reflects a death date of April, 1854 which we can see is incorrect. I have submitted corrections but to this date the memorial has not been updated to reflect those changes. The following is information that I am still sorting out with regard to Polly and at present should be considered to be a Hypothesis only and not fact. Note that the above clip from Jonathans Barrett's will mentions "Allen McDonald and Becky his wife" as children of Polly Barrett-Eades. My third-great grandparents are Allen McDaniel and wife Rebecca Bart. For years I have looked for information on who Rebecca's parents were. I could find nothing for the surname Bart in spite of countless hours of research. The surname for Rebecca was taken from her youngest daughter, Margaret McDaniel-Lamberts Death Certificate This puzzling info has me wondering if This Allen McDaniel and Rebecca Bart are the same couple mentioned in the will of Jonathan Barrett. If so that would mean that Rebecca was the daughter of Polly Barrett. Could then the surname Bart for Rebecca actually be Barrett? If so, was then Rebecca the daughter of Polly Barrett and Ezekiel Eades or was she an illegitimate daughter of Polly Barrett? We know that Allen and Rebecca had two daughters, Amanda and Letitia that married into the Eades family. Amanda was my 2nd Great Grandmother, she married William Franklin Eades and her sister Letitia McDaniel married Alfred Eades. Alfred and William were sons of John Eades and Polly Massey and Grandsons of Ezekiel Eades and Polly Barrett.
I have been looking at my DNA match lists to try and see if I can figure out if this hypothesis might hold any water. I will share more about the DNA findings in a future post.

This portion of my website will be used to share updates on my research projects. I am continually working on my Fathers side of the Family Tree. My father has roots that go back to the Southern region of the United States. As a result I have uncovered several Planters in my Family History. I have been working with the Beyond Kin Project to Document the Enslaved Persons who lived and worked on my families plantations. As a result of my efforts through the project, I have created a second website specifically for the project entitled: My Antebellum Ancestors. My goal is to find as many of the Enslaved Individuals that I can in hopes that I can give their descendants missing information they may need to find their Ancestors. This new website is a work in progress so please bare with me as I add the information to the site. To date I have discovered over thirteen Planters in my Fathers line and one in my Mothers, who are listed on the site. I am currently working on each of these ancestors and it may take some time before this site is complete so bookmark it and check back often. I am using Traditional Genealogical Research along with Genetic Genealogy in order to flush out these Ancestors and paint a picture of their lives.
Any future updates to this (Ezekiel Eades Family) website will be listed here on this blog. I will provide updates on the Antebellum Website with regard to its information. |
